London Heathrow Hits 84.5M Passengers Record in 2025, Expects 150M in the Future

London Heathrow Airport set a new annual passenger record in 2025, handling 84.5 million travelers over the year. This marks a 0.7 percent increase compared with 83.9 million passengers in 2024, confirming Heathrow’s position as Europe’s busiest airport.
Сonsistent growth
Heathrow exceeded its 2024 traffic levels in 9 out of 12 months during 2025, reflecting consistent demand across most of the year. December was particularly strong, with almost 7.2 million passengers passing through the airport, making it the busiest December on record.
The airport also recorded its busiest single day ever on August 1, when around 270,000 passengers traveled through its terminals.
Key markets and regional trends
European Union destinations remained Heathrow’s largest market in 2025, accounting for 28.4 million passengers. This represented an increase of 1.1 percent compared with the previous year. North America ranked second, with 20.6 million passengers, though this was a slight decline of 0.3 percent versus 2024.
Airport officials noted that while transatlantic demand remains strong, growth was more pronounced on short-haul European routes.
Expansion plans and future capacity
Heathrow continues to pursue a £49 billion ($66 billion) expansion program that includes the construction of a long-planned third runway. The project has received approval from the UK government in August 2025 after years of legal challenges.
Once completed, the expansion is expected to raise Heathrow’s annual capacity to as many as 150 million passengers, significantly easing congestion.
Competition from Istanbul
Meanwhile, Istanbul Airport reported handling 84.4 million passengers in 2025, just below Heathrow’s total.
Istanbul has also announced a $2.3 billion modernization program focused on expanding freight capacity and improving ground infrastructure. These investments are expected to enhance passenger processing efficiency and strengthen Istanbul’s role as a global aviation and logistics hub.
