Disaster tourism

Disaster tourism, also known as dark tourism, is when people visit areas that have experienced natural or man-made disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, war zones, or industrial accidents. Some travelers go to witness the aftermath while others support recovery efforts.

Disaster tourism sometimes overlaps with sustainable tourism and responsible tourism when tours are planned in ways that respect local communities, contribute to recovery, and raise awareness.

In some cases, disaster tourism brings income to affected areas that rely on such tours for survival. Tours might include visiting museums and memorial sites, or conversations with survivors and local leaders.Responsible disaster tourism focuses on awareness and respect. Tour operators offering such trips are expected to follow ethical practices and ensure the local community benefits from the visits.
