Tariff
A tariff is the official list of rates charged for services in the travel and hospitality industry. Hotels publish tariffs for different room types and seasons, while airlines and rail operators use them to set base fares before taxes and fees. In tourism, tariffs can also apply to excursions, transfers, or land arrangements.
Tariffs are a foundation of revenue management, guiding how prices are adjusted through discounts, promotions, or dynamic pricing strategies. For example, a hotel’s tariff may state a standard nightly rate, while the actual selling price will vary based on occupancy rate, booking window, or demand.
For travelers, understanding tariffs helps compare value across suppliers, while for providers, tariffs ensure consistency and transparency across distribution channels, including OTAs and GDSs.
