Turkish Airlines Prepares Binding Offer for Air Europa Amid Competition Withdrawal

Air Europa

Turkish Airlines has announced its intention to submit a binding offer for a stake in Spanish airline Air Europa, following earlier non-binding talks. This move comes after competitors Lufthansa and Air France-KLM backed out of the bidding process, leaving Turkish Airlines as the only remaining contender.

The acquisition would strategically enhance Turkish Airlines' network, particularly in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula, where Air Europa has a significant presence. Turkish Airlines aims to leverage this expanded reach to further solidify its position in global air travel. In addition to increasing connectivity, the deal would also bring opportunities in maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services and potential synergies in customer loyalty programs.

The offer comes as Air Europa seeks capital to repay a government-backed loan due in 2026. The airline’s parent company, Globalia, seeks to alleviate financial burdens, with Turkish Airlines' investment being a key part of its strategy.

As of August 6, 2025, Turkish Airlines is preparing to finalize the offer, pending board approval. The acquisition could significantly impact the European aviation landscape, with Turkish Airlines' plans to expand its European and Latin American routes.

In June 2025, Turkish Airlines returned to the Sabre GDS after almost a year-long break and now offers NDC content through Sabre.
