Spirit Recalls 500 Pilots as Bankruptcy Staffing Gaps Grow

Spirit Airlines is recalling roughly 500 furloughed pilots after losing more pilots than expected during its restructuring.
More pilots left than Spirit expected
Spirit had furloughed pilots to cut costs and match a reduced schedule during bankruptcy. But the airline later found that attrition was running higher than forecast, meaning more pilots left the company than planned.
That made it harder to keep enough crews in place for daily operations. Recall notices went to pilots furloughed between September 2024 and November 2025.
The airline is still shrinking, not expanding again
The pilot recall does not mean Spirit is returning to its previous size. The airline has said it wants to exit bankruptcy as a leaner company with a reworked fleet, network, and cost structure.
In its February 24, 2026, restructuring update, Spirit said it expects to emerge from Chapter 11 in late spring or early summer 2026 as a low-cost, value-focused carrier offering both basic and premium products.
Spirit also continues to adjust the business while moving toward its planned bankruptcy exit. The airline is streamlining operations around stronger routes and peak travel periods, while the company says it is still working through the final steps of its restructuring.
