Amex Buys Hyper as AI Expense Tools Move Into the Mainstream

American Express (Amex) has agreed to acquire Hyper, an AI expense management company, in a deal announced on April 16, 2026.
The company said the acquisition will strengthen its commercial-services business by adding more AI expertise and more automation tools for business customers.
Hyper builds software that helps companies manage expenses with less manual work. Amex expects the deal to close in the second quarter of 2026, subject to standard closing conditions. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Hyper focuses on a part of corporate travel that still creates friction
Hyper was founded in 2022 and builds AI tools for expense management.
According to Amex, its software can categorize expenses, file reports, compare spending against budgets and company policy, and remind employees when submissions are still due.
The acquisition supports Amex’s wider commercial strategy
In March, the company said it would roll out eight new products, benefits, and AI-powered capabilities for business customers in 2026.
It also said an expense management platform would launch later this year.
Amex has also made clear that AI is now part of its long-term product strategy. In his annual shareholder letter, CEO Stephen Squeri said the company is building more AI-powered experiences across its platforms. Hyper strengthens that effort by adding both technology and a team focused on practical workflow automation.
This was already a working partnership
Amex and Hyper had already worked together before the acquisition. In 2024, the companies launched the Hypercard Rewards Amex card, which included embedded AI-powered expense agents through Amex’s Agile Partner Platform.
Travel and expense tools are moving closer together
Recently, Amex said it would roll out eight new products, benefits, and AI-powered capabilities for business customers in 2026, and it also confirmed that an expense management platform will launch later this year. The Hyper deal fits that push by adding more AI talent and expense automation tools just as the company expands its broader commercial offer.
