Amadeus Makes $1.4B Identity Bet to Speed Up Airport Travel

Amadeus announced that it plans to acquire Idemia Public Security for €1.2 billion ($1.4 billion).
Idemia Public Security is a France-based company that provides biometric and identity technology for airports, border agencies, governments, and private companies. The deal is expected to close in mid-2027, if it receives the required regulatory approvals.
The acquisition would help Amadeus expand beyond its traditional travel software business. Amadeus already provides technology for airlines, airports, hotels, travel agencies, and corporate travel platforms. With Idemia Public Security, it wants to make digital identity a bigger part of the travel journey, from airport check-in to border control and boarding.
Why biometrics are becoming more important in travel
Airports and border agencies are trying to move more passengers through terminals without creating longer lines. Travelers often need to show their passport, boarding pass, or identity document several times before they reach the aircraft. This slows down the journey and adds more work for airport staff, airlines, and immigration officers.
Biometric systems are designed to reduce that friction. They can confirm a traveler’s identity using facial recognition, fingerprints, or other secure identity data. In travel, this can support faster check-in, bag drop, security, immigration, and boarding.
Why Idemia public security is a strategic target
Idemia Public Security gives Amadeus more scale in secure identity technology. The company has about 3,300 employees and works with more than 600 public and private-sector customers. Its systems are used in border management, passenger processing, government identity services, and other regulated areas where accurate identity checks are important.
The deal builds on Amadeus’ Vision-Box acquisition
The Idemia deal follows Amadeus’ 2024 acquisition of Vision-Box, a specialist in biometric technology for airports, airlines, and border control customers. Amadeus announced the deal in January 2024 for €320 million ($342 million) and later completed it after receiving regulatory approvals.
Vision-Box gave Amadeus a stronger base in airport biometrics. Idemia Public Security would add more government identity expertise and a wider global customer base.
This also fits a wider shift toward digital identity in air travel. Last year, Malaysia Airlines adopted Amadeus Travel Ready, a system that lets travelers upload and verify passports, visas, and other documents before reaching the airport. That update supports IATA’s One ID vision, which aims to make travel more contactless and reduce repeated document checks.
