Minimum connection time (MCT)

Minimum connection time (MCT) is the shortest time needed for passengers and their baggage to transfer between connecting flights at an airport. It’s set by the airport or airlines based on factors like terminal distance, security checks, and customs.

For domestic-to-domestic connections, the MCT might be 30 minutes. However, it could be longer for international routes, especially when changing terminals or going through immigration.

Flight booking systems usually factor MCT into ticket availability. If a connection doesn’t meet the required minimum, it won’t show up in search results, or the booking will be flagged as risky.

It’s important to note that MCT represents the absolute minimum time needed. It doesn’t account for delays or airport congestion during peak seasons.

Understanding MCT helps prevent missed flights. Travel agents and self-booking travelers should watch for tight layovers and allow enough buffer time, especially when flying through large or busy airports.
