Customs

Customs refer to the authorities responsible for regulating the flow of goods and people in and out of a country. They enforce laws concerning imports, exports, tariffs, and the collection of duties and taxes on goods.

Customs are also responsible for ensuring compliance with national laws, including prohibiting illegal goods or monitoring restricted items (e.g. weapons, drugs, plants, animals, or certain foods).

Customs can also refer to the physical location or checkpoint at a border where customs officials inspect travelers and goods entering or leaving a country.

For example, upon arriving at an international airport, travelers are required to declare any items they are bringing into the country that exceed duty-free allowances or are subject to regulation.
