Wake-Up Call for Airline Tech Resilience: Alaska IT Failure Halts Flights

On October 23, 2025, Alaska Airlines experienced a major IT outage caused by a failure at its primary data center.
The airline was forced to temporarily halt all Alaska and Horizon Air flights nationwide starting around 3:30 PM Pacific Time. Flights operated by Hawaiian Airlines were not affected.
The outage impacted essential operational systems that manage flight scheduling, crew assignments, and air traffic coordination. It led to a system-wide ground stop for several hours, lasting until about 11:30 PM PT.
Over 229 flights were canceled due to the disruption, and as operations gradually resumed, further delays and cancellations were expected as the airline repositioned planes and crews.
Alaska Airlines activated a flexible travel policy to assist customers, offering rebooking options and support throughout recovery efforts.
The outage has been confirmed as a technical failure unrelated to external incidents or cybersecurity threats, such as the one in September 2025, when a cyberattack on major European airports caused widespread failures in automatic check-in and boarding processes.
