Trump Eyes Spirit Rescue as Fuel Costs Push Crisis Deeper

Spirit Airlines is drawing attention from the White House after President Donald Trump said the US government should review whether the carrier needs help.

On April 21, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Trump had directed the Department of Transportation to look into Spirit’s situation, following reports that the airline was seeking federal support.

The discussion comes as Spirit faces growing pressure from high jet fuel prices and a weak financial position. The airline has already gone through bankruptcy restructuring more than once, and it is now trying to avoid a possible liquidation.

Federal support is being discussed, but no decision has been made

Trump said publicly that “maybe” the federal government should help Spirit, while also saying he would prefer another company to buy the airline.

Spirit is exploring whether the government could take an equity stake, which would mean Washington investing directly in the company.

The US government did support airlines during the pandemic, but that aid was designed to protect the whole industry during a national emergency.

High fuel prices are making Spirit’s recovery much harder

The biggest immediate problem is fuel. Spirit’s recovery plans were based on much lower fuel costs than airlines are paying now. The company expected fuel to cost about $2.67 per gallon in 2026, but recent data shows prices closer to $3.87 per gallon.

Spirit was already in a weak position

This pressure has been building for months. Spirit has already gone through a second Chapter 11 filing, cut capacity by 25 percent, planned to furlough around 1,800 flight attendants, shrink its fleet, and focus only on stronger markets as it tried to stabilize the business. The airline’s bankruptcy exit was again thrown into doubt as higher fuel costs, court scrutiny, and liquidation talk put even more pressure on that recovery plan.
