Spirit Airlines to Furlough 270 Pilots and Demote 140 Captains

Spirit Airlines announced plans to furlough 270 pilots starting November 1 and demote 140 captains to first officer roles beginning October 1.
Spirit cited the need to align staffing with a reduced flight schedule.
In early 2025, Spirit took similar cost-cutting measures, furloughing over 300 pilots, downgrading captains, cutting 200 staff, and selling 23 aircraft.
The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) criticized the downgrades, arguing that the captain demotions weaken seniority structures and disrupt career progression.
In November 2024, Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, driven by losses totaling over $2.5 billion since 2020, failed merger attempts with Frontier and JetBlue, and mounting debt. By March 2025, the airline emerged from bankruptcy after executing a debt restructuring plan approved by the US Bankruptcy Court.
However, financial recovery has been slow due to low yields and mounting costs. The airline also faces competitive pressure from major carriers: In June 2025, Spirit asked the DOT to pause or block approval of the United–JetBlue partnership over fears of an unfair competitive advantage.
