Marriott Sues Sonder After Alleged Threat to Lock Out Hotel Guests

Marriott has filed court documents alleging that Sonder, the short-term rental and boutique hotel operator, attempted to secure up to $50 million in emergency financing by warning that it would otherwise be forced to abandon thousands of guests in place.

Marriott claims that Sonder threatened to disable hotel access systems and lock current guests out of their rooms unless Marriott agreed to fund the company’s operational wind-down, characterizing the move as an attempt to use guest safety as a bargaining chip.

Under a licensing agreement signed the previous year, many Sonder-run properties were integrated into the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program, creating deeper brand and operational interdependencies.

The company’s financial deterioration intensified throughout 2025. Sonder struggled with the high costs associated with integrating its inventory into Marriott’s infrastructure, while also dealing with softening demand and shrinking revenue.

Internal efforts to explore strategic alternatives, such as potential asset divestitures, restructuring proposals, and investor outreach, were unsuccessful as interested parties withdrew due to concerns about the company’s solvency.

Marriott extended interim funding to sustain operations in the days leading up to its decision to terminate the licensing agreement on November 9, 2025. Marriott has since initiated legal action seeking partial reimbursement of these funds and asserting that Sonder’s handling of the crisis damaged Marriott’s reputation with both guests and property partners.

Shortly after, Sonder filed for Chapter 7 liquidation. The filing initiated a global shutdown, forcing thousands of guests to vacate their accommodations abruptly and leading to widespread operational disruption at properties affiliated with both companies.
