Hotel Bookings Weaken as US Airport Delays Disrupt Travel

Hotel demand in major US gateway cities is starting to weaken as airport disruption spreads across the travel industry.
GlobalData said delays at US airports are beginning to reduce hotel bookings, while AHLA warned that long waits, missed flights, and growing uncertainty are now affecting lodging demand as well. Early signs include more last-minute cancellations and fewer bookings made far in advance.
The problem grew after TSA staffing came under pressure
The disruption is tied to the recent TSA staffing crisis. About 50,000 TSA workers went unpaid during the Department of Homeland Security standoff, and absenteeism rose as financial pressure increased.
Around 12 percent of officers were absent on one recent day, while some airports saw security waits stretch beyond four hours. Hundreds of TSA officers had already quit, making the problem harder to contain.
Hotels are now seeing the business effect
For hotels, the bigger concern is not only missed stays on the day of disruption. It is the shift in booking behavior. If travelers wait longer to confirm trips or cancel closer to arrival, hotels lose visibility into future demand and revenue becomes harder to manage.
AHLA said many hotels entered 2026 expecting demand to stay steady, but they were already dealing with higher labor, insurance, supply, and energy costs. Many properties also remained understaffed. That means even a modest slowdown in bookings can create real pressure.
Pay restored but TSA disruption still weighs on travel
The shutdown began in February after Congress failed to approve full funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
TSA staffing problems during the DHS shutdown showed how missed paychecks, rising absenteeism, and longer security lines were already starting to slow airport operations and weaken traveler confidence. The Department of Homeland Security has moved to restore pay for TSA workers, which should help reduce some of the pressure at airports.
