Google Maps Gets Smarter as Gemini Makes Search More Useful

Google has launched two major updates for Google Maps powered by its Gemini AI models.
The first is Ask Maps, a conversational feature that helps users search for places using natural language. The second is Immersive Navigation, a redesigned navigation experience that gives drivers a more visual and detailed view of the road ahead.
The app is becoming a broader travel tool for discovery, planning, and navigation.
Ask Maps makes travel research easier
Ask Maps lets users type questions in everyday language instead of relying on basic search terms. For example, someone can ask for scenic stops along a route or look for a specific type of place, such as a tennis court with lights for evening play.
Google is trying to solve a common travel planning problem here. Many people know what they want, but they do not know the exact words to search for it. Instead of repeating searches and reading many reviews, users can now ask a direct question and get results shown on a map.
Google wants users to go from search to action inside Maps
Google says Ask Maps can also personalize results based on a user’s past searches and saved places.
After finding a location, users can save it, start navigation, or, in some cases, book a restaurant reservation.
Immersive Navigation is designed to make driving clearer
The second update focuses on navigation after the route has already been chosen.
Immersive Navigation adds more visual detail to the driving experience, including 3D-style views of buildings, terrain, and overpasses.
Google says Gemini helps analyze the data behind Maps to highlight helpful route details such as crosswalks, stop signs, and road layout features. The aim is to make driving easier to understand, especially in unfamiliar places.
The rollout expands Google’s AI push in travel
Ask Maps has started rolling out in the US and India on Android and iOS, with desktop support expected later. Immersive Navigation has launched in the US and will expand to eligible iOS and Android devices, CarPlay, Android Auto, and cars with built-in Google services.
Last October, the company introduced a Google Maps tool in the Gemini API, allowing developers to use Maps data in their own apps. Now Google is bringing that AI approach more directly to everyday users.
