Booking.com: City Breaks Win US Summer Travelers

Booking.com says US travelers are showing stronger interest in domestic trips for summer 2026.
According to the company’s search data, domestic accommodation searches rose 21 percent year over year, while domestic flight searches increased 29 percent.
The data is based on searches made by US travelers from March 1 to May 15, 2026, for trips between June 1 and August 30, 2026. Booking.com says the increase points to rising demand for shorter trips within the US, especially city breaks that are easy to plan and fit into long weekends.
Travelers want easier city trips
City breaks are becoming more attractive because they offer a lot in a short amount of time. Travelers can plan trips around restaurants, concerts, museums, sports, shopping, and local neighborhoods without needing a long vacation.
This is useful for hotels, airlines, and travel platforms. It shows that many travelers are still willing to spend on trips, but they want options that feel flexible, convenient, and closer to home. For Booking.com, the trend also supports its wider goal of selling more than hotels, including flights, rental cars, taxis, and attractions.
Austin and other major cities stand out
Austin saw the biggest jump in Booking.com’s accommodation search data, with searches up 423 percent year over year. The city’s music scene, food culture, nightlife, and busy events calendar make it a strong choice for travelers looking for a short but active summer trip.
Other large cities also gained attention. Atlanta accommodation searches rose 81 percent, while Houston increased 52 percent. Flight searches also grew for San Francisco, Boston, Washington, D.C., San Diego, and Chicago. These destinations offer a mix of culture, history, food, waterfront areas, and easy air access.
Florida Remains a Strong Summer Market
Traditional summer destinations are still performing well. Miami and Orlando both recorded a 43 percent increase in accommodation searches compared with last year. Miami remains popular for beaches and nightlife, while Orlando continues to attract families and theme park travelers.
This trend also aligns with easyJet, which said travelers are booking later and showing greater interest in domestic trips and city breaks. Together, these updates suggest a wider shift in travel behavior: people are still planning summer trips, but they are choosing options that feel easier, closer, and more flexible.
