Airbnb Sells More Flexibility as Guests Want Safer Booking Options

Airbnb has started offering a paid cancellation add-on that gives guests more control if their plans change.

The feature is called the extended cancellation option. It lets eligible guests cancel a home booking for any reason and receive a full refund up to 24 hours before check-in.

The option is available only in selected countries and only when Airbnb shows it during booking. Guests pay Airbnb an extra fee for this added flexibility.

Hosts keep payouts but still face last-minute work

Airbnb says hosts will still be paid according to their own cancellation policy if a guest uses the extended cancellation option. The cancelled dates also reopen on the host’s calendar, and Airbnb says the cancellation will not hurt the host’s cancellation rate or Superhost status.

Still, the feature does not remove every problem for hosts. A cancellation one day before arrival can affect cleaning schedules, supplies, check-in planning, and pricing. Some homes may be rebooked quickly, especially during busy periods. Others may stay empty because there is too little time to find another guest.

A new revenue path for Airbnb

The feature also gives Airbnb a way to earn more from bookings without adding more listings. Instead of only charging service fees, Airbnb can sell extra peace of mind around the reservation.

This follows a wider travel-fintech trend. Companies such as Hopper have built products around uncertainty, including price protection, cancellation options, and disruption guarantees.

Airbnb tests add-ons after a strong start to 2026

The company has room to experiment. In Q1 2026, Airbnb said revenue grew 18 percent year over year to $2.7 billion, while gross booking value grew 19 percent. That strong booking base gives Airbnb a large audience for new add-ons.
