Airbnb Adds Cars, Hotels, More AI to Keep Travelers in Its App

Airbnb announced that it is adding rental cars, more boutique hotels, airport pickups, grocery delivery, luggage storage, and new AI tools to its app.

The update is part of its 2026 Summer Release and shows a clear shift in strategy. Airbnb is no longer positioning itself only as a place to book homes. It wants to become a broader travel platform.

The most important addition is rental cars. For the first time, Airbnb users will be able to find cars directly in the app. The feature will show vehicles near a traveler’s Airbnb stay and recommend options based on group size. Airbnb said about 25 percent of its guests already rent a car during their trip, but those bookings usually happen on other platforms.

Airbnb moves closer to Expedia and Booking

The update puts Airbnb closer to online travel agencies such as Expedia and Booking Holdings. These companies already sell many parts of a trip, including hotels, cars, activities, and other add-ons. That helps them increase revenue and keep travelers inside their own apps.

Airbnb is now moving in the same direction, but with a different model. It is using partners instead of owning all the services itself. Grocery delivery will come through Instacart, airport pickups through Welcome Pickups, and luggage storage through Bounce. This lets Airbnb add new trip services faster while keeping the app as the main customer interface.

Hotels become part of the plan again

Airbnb is also expanding boutique and independent hotel bookings to 20 cities, including New York, Paris, London, Madrid, Rome, and Singapore. The company said it is not adding major hotel chains in this rollout. Instead, it wants selected hotels that fit Airbnb’s design-focused and neighborhood-style image.

Hotels can help Airbnb in cities where short-term rentals are limited by regulation or strong demand. The company has tried hotels before, including its 2019 acquisition of HotelTonight.

Services and experiences fill the gaps around a stay

Airbnb is also adding services that solve common travel problems. Grocery delivery helps guests stock a rental before or during a stay. Airport pickups make arrival easier. Luggage storage gives travelers a place to keep bags before check-in or after check-out.

The company is also expanding Experiences with more activities around major landmarks. That is a shift from Airbnb’s earlier focus on smaller, local, and unusual experiences. The new approach is more mainstream and puts Airbnb closer to tours and attractions platforms such as Viator and GetYourGuide.

AI makes the app easier to use

Airbnb is adding AI tools to help travelers make decisions faster. One new feature will summarize guest reviews and highlight useful points such as location, amenities, and family-friendliness. Later this year, Airbnb also plans to add comparison tools that summarize saved homes and help users choose between them.

AI is also helping Airbnb reduce customer support costs. In Q1 2026, the company said more than 40 percent of guest support issues handled through its AI assistant were solved without a human agent. Airbnb also said its cost per booking fell about 10 percent year over year in Q1.

Airbnb uses Q1 momentum

The launch comes after a strong first quarter for Airbnb. The company reported revenue of $2.7 billion, up 18 percent year over year. Gross Booking Value grew 19 percent, and guests spent nearly $30 billion on the platform. Airbnb also raised its full-year 2026 outlook and now expects low- to mid-teens revenue growth.

The Summer Release shows where Airbnb is heading next. It is building a more complete travel app around homes, hotels, cars, services, experiences, and AI.
