Abra Group Calls Off Gol-Azul Merger Amid Bankruptcy Hurdles

Abra Group, Gol's controlling shareholder, has officially ended merger talks with Azul, the two leading Brazilian airlines.
Abra stated that no progress had occurred for several months due to Azul’s ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.
As a result, potential merger discussions have been terminated, and the previously existing codeshare agreement between Gol and Azul has also been discontinued.
The talks began in January 2025, outlining the terms of a possible merger to create the largest Brazilian airline by fleet size and passenger volume. Eventually, the complexities linked to Azul’s bankruptcy have stalled any progress.
In the meantime, Azul has announced plans to continue honoring tickets issued under the old codeshare agreement while it prepares to move forward independently.
