Validating carrier
A validating carrier is the airline designated as the primary ticketed carrier on whose ticket stock (also called the “plate”) the ticket is issued.
This airline is the one to which payment is submitted when the ticket is purchased.
In most cases, the validating carrier is the first airline on the itinerary for domestic travel or the airline operating the first international segment for international travel. However, it can also be a different airline if the ticket is issued on that carrier’s plate due to commercial agreements or fare construction rules.
The concept exists primarily because airline tickets are not just transportation documents but also financial instruments that determine which airline collects the money and how revenue is distributed among multiple participating carriers.
The goal is to centralize financial responsibility and settlement. When multiple airlines are included on a single ticket, the validating carrier collects the full payment and then distributes the appropriate portions to the other airlines involved in the journey.
