Travel advisory

A travel advisory (also known as a travel warning and travel alert) is an official notice issued by a government, international organization, or travel authority to inform about travel risks associated with a particular destination.

The advisories are regularly updated as situations evolve and often categorized by risk levels. For example, the levels of travel alerts used by the US Department of State are as follows:

  • Level 1: Exercise normal precautions. This is the lowest threat level, indicating general safety with usual caution.
  • Level 2: Exercise increased caution. This indicates heightened risks to safety and security, which usually apply to specific areas within a country.
  • Level 3: Reconsider travel. This is a warning of serious risks to safety and security, advising travelers to reconsider plans to visit.
  • Level 4: Do not travel. This is the highest level, indicating life-threatening risks, and travel is strongly discouraged.

Travel warnings usually focus on safety, health, political, environmental, or logistical aspects of the region. Most popular examples include disease outbreaks and natural disasters.
