Average bed rate (ABR)

Average bed rate (ABR) is a performance metric used in shared accommodations that measures the average revenue earned per occupied bed, rather than per room, which is more appropriate in properties where multiple guests share the same room (e.g., hostels).

This metric helps hostel owners and budget lodging managers track performance, set competitive pricing, and optimize yield from each bed. It also allows comparison with competitors on a per-guest basis.

To compute ABR, managers divide the total revenue generated from all occupied beds by the total number of beds sold. For instance, if a hostel earns $2,000 in one night from 100 sold beds, the ABR is $20.

ABR can also be segmented by room type (e.g., 4-bed vs. 10-bed rooms) to understand which configurations are most profitable.
