United Adds Polaris Base Fare as Premium Cabins Get More Basic

United Airlines is introducing a new “Base” fare in Polaris business class and Premium Plus, adding a third option alongside Standard and Flexible.

The airline announced the change on April 3 and said it will begin in select markets this month before expanding during the rest of 2026. The new structure will apply to long-haul international flights, premium transcontinental routes, and some Hawaii services.

The premium seat stays, but several benefits are removed

Standard and Flexible will keep the benefits travelers already know. These fares still include two checked bags, and Flexible remains the refundable option. The main change is the new Base fare, which removes several features that many travelers usually expect in a premium booking.

Base travelers will have to pay for seat selection, will get only one free checked bag, and will not be able to change flights. Their tickets will not be refundable and will not qualify for future flight credit. They also will not be eligible for upgrades. That means the onboard seat remains premium, but the fare itself becomes much more restrictive.

Lounge access is now part of the fare split

United is also separating the airport experience more clearly. Standard and Flexible Polaris customers will continue to have access to Polaris lounges, while Base business-class travelers will get access to United Club lounges instead.

Premium cabins are becoming more segmented products

Large carriers are trying to earn more from premium demand without relying only on richer cabin products. A lower premium fare helps United attract travelers who want extra comfort but do not need full flexibility or every included perk.

Carriers are no longer treating premium cabins as one fixed product. That broader trend was already visible in Delta’s plan to introduce “basic” fares for business and first class, showing how major airlines are trying to open premium cabins to more price-sensitive travelers while protecting higher-yield fare tiers.
