Turkish Airlines has announced a $2.3 billion investment program aimed at expanding and modernizing its infrastructure across different facilities, located mainly in Istanbul.

The announcement was made during a ceremony by Chairman Ahmet Bolat, alongside Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, and marked the launch of eight major centers across cargo, maintenance, training, catering, and digital operations.

Expansion of Istanbul Airport capabilities

A central project is the construction of what Turkish Airlines describes as the largest cargo terminal globally, significantly increasing freight capacity and reinforcing Istanbul’s role in global logistics.

Passenger handling efficiency is also expected to improve through upgraded ground systems and support facilities.

The investment package includes new maintenance, repair, and overhaul hangars under the airline’s MRO Phase II program, expanded pilot and cabin crew training academies, and a new large-scale in-flight catering complex.

Additional spending will support advanced IT and data centers to strengthen operational resilience and digital services.

These projects are aligned with Turkish Airlines’ long-term plan to grow its fleet to about 1,000 aircraft by 2036, as outlined by Bolat during remarks tied to the carrier’s 93-year milestone.

Broader aviation strategy in Europe

Alongside domestic investment, Turkey is reshaping its aviation footprint in Europe.

In November 2025, Turkish Airlines received board approval to sell its entire 49 percent stake in Air Albania, signaling a shift toward larger and more competitive airline markets. Additionally, Turkey’s Pegasus Airlines agreed to acquire Czech Airlines and its main operating carrier Smartwings, a move that will add 47 aircraft to Pegasus’s existing fleet of 127 and significantly expand its presence across Europe.
