TUI Bets Bigger on River Cruises With Two New Ships for 2028

TUI River Cruises has confirmed that it will add two newly built ships in 2028.

With the new vessels, TUI River Cruises is moving from six ships in 2026 to a 10-ship program by 2028. That will give the company more capacity across key river cruise markets, including the Rhine, the Douro, the Nile, and other European waterways.

Why river cruising fits TUI’s strategy

River cruises appeal to travelers who want a slower and more immersive kind of trip. Compared with ocean cruises, the ships are smaller and the experience is usually more focused on cities, local culture, and guided sightseeing.

The new ships are built for the next stage of growth

A key part of the announcement is that these are new-build ships, not older vessels being refurbished.

Each ship will have 94 cabins and space for 188 guests. TUI says they will offer modern interiors, spacious public areas, and more choice for guests, while keeping the brand’s service style at the center of the onboard experience.

TUI is also preparing for future fuel changes

TUI said the two ships will be built with the foundations for alternative fuels, especially methanol.

New ships now need to offer not only comfort and design, but also a better long-term fit with environmental goals.

More targeted river cruise market

The market is growing even as it becomes more segmented, as operators build products for different types of travelers. TUI River Cruises’ new ship order is not only about adding capacity. It is also a way to build a clearer position in the part of the market where demand is rising for smaller, experience-led, and culturally focused travel.
