TSA has announced plans to significantly expand its PreCheck Touchless ID program, a biometric and hands-free security verification system.

Phased rollout and priority airports

By the end of spring 2026, the program is expected to operate at 65 US airports, up from the current 15 locations. Existing sites already include major hubs such as Atlanta (ATL), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Chicago O'Hare (ORD), and Los Angeles (LAX).

The next phase of expansion will prioritize 15 additional airports, including Houston Bush Intercontinental (IAH), Washington Dulles (IAD), Boston Logan (BOS), and Miami (MIA).

The remaining 34 airports will be added in stages. Once deployed, eligible travelers will be able to move through security checkpoints in under 10 seconds, reducing congestion and wait times at busy airports.

How the system works

The Touchless ID program is available to TSA PreCheck members flying with participating airlines, including Alaska, American, Delta, Southwest, and United.

After a one-time opt-in using a Known Traveler Number, travelers can verify their identity through facial recognition. The system matches a live image against existing passport or driver’s license photos, allowing passengers to proceed.

TSA’s expansion reflects a broader global shift toward biometric travel systems. A similar initiative is being implemented in Europe with the Entry/Exit System, which replaces manual passport stamping with a fully digital process. The system records traveler entries and exits using biometric data to improve security and border efficiency.
