Lufthansa Adds 1,600 Summer Flights as Europe and India Demand Stays Strong

Lufthansa Group is adding about 1,600 flights to its summer 2026 schedule after seeing stronger demand on key routes across Europe and India.
The airline group announced the expansion on March 31 and said the added capacity will be spread across its main hubs, including Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, Zurich, and Brussels.
The decision shows where airlines currently see the best opportunity. Lufthansa is not expanding everywhere. It is adding flights in markets where demand is stronger and more reliable, while staying cautious in regions still affected by geopolitical risk and operational uncertainty.
India is getting the biggest long-haul increase
The largest long-haul boost is on routes between Germany and India. Lufthansa plans to add two weekly flights from Frankfurt to Chennai, two weekly flights from Frankfurt to Delhi, one more Frankfurt-Hyderabad flight, and one more weekly Munich-Bangalore flight. SWISS is also adding seven weekly Delhi flights.
India has become an increasingly important market for European airlines. It offers a mix of business travel, family travel, and onward connections.
Southern Europe is also seeing more summer capacity
Lufthansa is also adding around 540 extra European flights between April and October. The additional services are aimed mainly at popular summer destinations in Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Italy.
While Lufthansa is adding flights in Europe and India, other parts of the network remain under pressure from geopolitical instability. Carriers continue moving aircraft toward routes with stronger demand and fewer operational risks. Some airlines are going the other way in weaker or more exposed markets. SAS planned to cancel around 1,000 April flights because of higher fuel costs, while United has also cut some flights as airlines respond to the same pressure.
