Indian Airlines Help Bring Home Stranded Travelers as Middle East Disruptions Continue

Indian airlines began operating special relief flights on March 3 and March 4 to bring home stranded travelers after airspace restrictions disrupted flights across major Gulf routes.
India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation said carriers were adding capacity and coordinating with foreign aviation authorities and Indian missions abroad to move passengers safely while normal schedules remained unstable. The disruption followed military escalation involving Iran, Israel, and the US.
Why this became a big India travel story
The Gulf is not only a destination for Indian travelers, but also a key transit bridge for flights between India and Europe, Africa, and North America. When multiple nearby airspaces were restricted at the same time, airlines lost both main routes and backup options, turning a regional crisis into a wider network problem.
India is especially exposed because of its large diaspora in the Gulf and heavy travel demand to the region. That means even short disruptions can affect workers, students, families, and tourists at scale.
What Indian Airlines and the government did
India’s response focused on relief flights and passenger movement rather than immediate schedule normalization.
Carriers started targeted operations from airports that remained workable. Air India operated a special Dubai-Delhi flight, IndiGo planned relief flights from Jeddah, and other Indian carriers adjusted services based on route availability and safety restrictions.
What happens next
As of March 4, recovery remained partial. Indian authorities said special arrangements and added capacity were continuing, while some Gulf carriers and hubs still faced restrictions or limited operations.
This disruption comes as Indian travel demand remains strong, which makes major route interruptions more visible across bookings and pricing.
A small but important shift began on Monday, when a limited number of evacuation and scheduled flights were cleared to depart from the UAE, allowing some stranded travelers to leave even as wider disruption continued.
