As Spirit's Market Hold Wanes, Fort Lauderdale Airport Welcomes a New Challenger

JetBlue has announced an expansion of its operations at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), a market historically dominated by Spirit Airlines.
Starting in November 2025, the airline is launching nonstop routes, including first-time service to Cali, Colombia, and new international destinations such as Liberia, Costa Rica, and San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
JetBlue will also reinstate flights to popular destinations it served before, including Aruba, Cartagena (Colombia), Grand Cayman, and St. Maarten.
Many of these new routes overlap with Spirit Airlines’ operations, indicating JetBlue’s strategic move to capture market share amid Spirit’s financial challenges following its second bankruptcy filing within a year.
United Airlines and Frontier Airlines are also entering new markets to capitalize on opportunities created by Spirit’s cutbacks.
