Expedia Job Restructuring: New Layoffs While Hiring

Expedia Group has launched another round of job cuts, even as it advertises more than 250 open roles across its global operations, according to Skift. The company has not disclosed how many employees are affected or which departments are experiencing reductions, leaving the overall scale of the impact unclear.
Expedia aims to simplify its structure and reduce layers
Expedia explained that this is part of an ongoing evaluation of what skills and capabilities it will need in the future, adjusting hiring and staffing to match long-term priorities. Leadership also said the broader purpose of the move is to reduce management layers and create a structure that allows faster decision-making.
A flatter structure is often designed to help large companies react more quickly to changes in market conditions, customer behavior, and technology trends.
The combination of layoffs and new openings suggests a redistribution of talent toward areas viewed as critical for long-term competitiveness as travel continues to evolve in 2026.
New AI leadership adds context
This workforce adjustment comes about two months after Expedia appointed its first chief AI and data science officer, Xavier Amatriain, who previously held a senior AI leadership role at Google as VP of AI and compute enablement.
His focus at Expedia includes using the company’s vast traveler data to improve search accuracy, increase conversion rates, strengthen personalization, and guide the development of new AI-driven products. However, there is no confirmed evidence that his appointment is directly linked to the current round of job reductions.
