Etihad Adds 5 China Routes as Abu Dhabi Hub Ambitions Grow

Etihad Airways said that it will launch five new routes from Abu Dhabi to Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen.
The airline said the expansion will add 28 weekly flights and increase its mainland China network to 35 weekly services across six cities, including its existing daily service to Beijing Daxing.
The airline is targeting business and cargo markets, not only tourism
Etihad’s choice of cities shows this expansion is about more than leisure travel. Shanghai is a major financial and cargo gateway. Guangzhou is a large manufacturing center. Shenzhen is one of China’s main technology hubs. Hangzhou is closely tied to eCommerce, while Chengdu is an important inland business city.
That mix gives Etihad access to several types of demand at once, including corporate travel, trade links, freight, and some leisure traffic.
Etihad is rolling out the new China routes in stages with China Eastern
The rollout will happen in stages. Shanghai is scheduled to launch on October 1, 2026. Guangzhou and Hangzhou are scheduled to start on March 4, 2027, followed by Chengdu on March 5 and Shenzhen on March 7.
Etihad said the new services will be part of its joint venture with China Eastern Airlines.
China expansion strengthens Abu Dhabi’s hub role as Etihad grows again
The move adds more direct capacity between the Gulf and one of the world’s biggest aviation markets. It also strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a transfer hub, giving travelers from China more one-stop access to destinations in the Middle East, Europe, and Africa through Etihad’s network.
Etihad’s China push also looks more convincing when seen alongside the airline’s broader recovery and growth story. With Etihad's record 2025 profit, the carrier entered 2026 with stronger earnings, higher passenger volumes, and more confidence in expanding its network.
