Emirates Lines Up Berlin Slots for Winter 2026, but Dubai Route Still Needs German Approval

Untitled design

Emirates has secured takeoff-and-landing slots at Berlin Brandenburg for the winter 2026/27 season, setting up a possible launch of Dubai–Berlin flights in December 2026. But slots only reserve airport access at specific times — they don’t grant the traffic rights needed to operate the route.

The rights still require the approval of Germany, which has not yet made a final decision on the traffic rights Emirates needs to add to Berlin.

What this could mean for travelers and the market

If approved, a daily widebody service would add significant long-haul capacity and one-stop access via Emirates’ Dubai hub to dozens of onward destinations, reshaping Berlin’s long-haul options and premium competition.

From an airport operations angle, the early slot move is normal: airlines secure scarce timings well ahead of a season so schedules can be built with certainty and congestion is managed fairly.

Why this is a regulatory gamble in Germany

Emirates argues the current Germany–UAE air services arrangements cap it at four German “points of call,” — in other words, the specific cities it is allowed to serve (and sell tickets to) under the bilateral agreement —  and it says it is already fully using that allowance, meaning Berlin requires an expansion (or a swap). The debate is politically sensitive because German incumbents, especially Lufthansa, have long opposed additional Gulf carrier access due to competitive balance concerns.

Latest update and the key precedent Emirates is pointing to

The most recent update remains unchanged: Germany has not issued a final “yes” on traffic rights, even as operational planning advances.

Emirates is also pointing to precedent in the market: Qatar Airways now operates five German destinations (including Hamburg as a fifth), showing that expanded access has been possible under certain conditions—even if Emirates’ case still needs its own approval.

Two months ago, Emirates signed a strategic collaboration with OpenAI to roll out ChatGPT Enterprise across the company and train staff to embed generative AI into day-to-day operations.
