Delta Exits Binghamton, $54M Renovations Were Not Enough

Delta Air Lines has confirmed it will end its only remaining route from Greater Binghamton Airport in New York, discontinuing daily service to Detroit effective February 14, 2026.
Once the route ends, the airport will be left without any scheduled commercial passenger flights, despite completing a $54 million terminal renovation in recent years.
This decision marks a major setback for the region’s air connectivity and economic development efforts.
Background on the Detroit route
The Detroit service was operated by Delta Connection using 50-seat regional jets and had become Binghamton’s last link to the national air network. United Airlines ended service at the airport in 2016, followed by American Airlines in 2017, leaving Delta as the sole remaining carrier.
The route provided important connectivity for business travelers, including access to major corporate hubs such as Ford and IAC through Detroit.
However, passenger demand remained weak, with average load factors estimated at 60–70 percent, levels that made the route financially unsustainable.
Greater Binghamton Airport completed a $54 million renovation in an effort to reverse declining service and attract new airlines. Local officials had hoped these upgrades would attract low-cost carriers such as Allegiant, but no new airline commitments materialized, and the improved facilities were not enough to offset limited local demand.
What happens next
Delta is assisting affected passengers with refunds and alternative travel options. Broome County officials say discussions are ongoing with multiple airlines, with the goal of restoring commercial service as early as the second quarter of 2026.
The announcement comes as Delta prepares for a leadership transition. The airline recently confirmed that President Glen Hauenstein will retire on February 28, 2026, concluding a career that has played a central role in shaping Delta’s modern network and commercial strategy.
