ChatGPT Follows Perplexity, Launches New AI Browser that Can Book Travel

OpenAI has introduced a new web browser called ChatGPT Atlas. The central feature of this launch is its Agent Mode, which allows the AI to perform activities on behalf of the user, such as booking travel or shopping for a trip.
CEO Sam Altman announced Atlas during a live-streamed event, describing it as an AI-powered web browser built around ChatGPT.
Atlas can click through websites, fill out forms, and complete tasks based on user instructions. This means users can ask the AI to help with comparing flights or making hotel reservations directly through the browser.
The conversational assistant provides real-time explanations and suggests next steps in travel research or planning. Users can also filter different types of links to find relevant information faster.
Atlas’s Agent Mode transforms the travel discovery process by assisting with research, price comparison, ticket booking, and even handling post-booking changes.
This launch reflects a growing shift toward AI agents in travel that simplify various online workflows, making digital interactions faster and more efficient.
Notably, OpenAI is not the first large language model (LLM) provider to introduce its own web browser.
Earlier in 2025, Perplexity AI launched Comet, which also integrates the company's AI capabilities directly into the browsing experience. Perplexity partnered with Expedia Group to promote the launch of Comet, offering travelers who download Comet an upgrade to Expedia’s Silver status in its OneKey loyalty program.
