American Expands Aggressively, United Pledges to Defend Gates

American Airlines has announced new routes from its major hubs in Chicago and Los Angeles, intensifying its competitive push against United.
Among the key moves is a seasonal flight from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to Maui, scheduled to operate daily from December 17, 2026, through March 27, 2027. The route will be served by Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft featuring business, premium economy, and economy cabins, marking O’Hare as American’s fourth gateway to Maui alongside its year-round services from Dallas-Fort Worth, Phoenix, and Los Angeles.
American’s aggressive Chicago expansion
This expansion is part of American’s broader plan to add more than 100 daily flights from ORD starting early 2026, reaching over 75 destinations and creating the airline’s largest spring schedule ever at the hub.
On the West Coast, American will also launch daily flights from Los Angeles to Washington Dulles and Cleveland on April 7, entering head-to-head competition with United on both routes.
United vows to defend its Chicago stronghold
United Airlines has responded to American’s expansion with a firm pledge to protect its presence at ORD, making this competition at O’Hare about control of gates and schedules rather than pricing.
CEO Scott Kirby said, “In 2026, we are drawing a line in the sand. We will not allow them to take a single gate at our expense [...] We will add as many flights as needed to maintain our gate count in Chicago.”
