Air India, Lufthansa Partner to Win Rising India-Europe Demand

Air India and Lufthansa Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that creates the framework for a future “joint business agreement” to expand India–Europe connectivity. The MoU is not the final operating plan yet. The airlines still need to negotiate the full commercial details and then seek regulatory approvals before any deeper coordination can formally take effect.
Why travelers could see smoother India–Europe connections
The most noticeable impact is usually smoother one-ticket journeys: better timed connections, more convenient itineraries, and more consistent service when travelers connect between airlines. For the industry, this is also a competitive move to capture fast-growing India–Europe demand and strengthen hub relevance in Europe versus other popular one-stop options.
Regulatory approval and how fast changes could roll out
This is an expansion of an existing relationship, not a brand-new tie-up. The airlines already code-share on 145 routes, linking 15 Indian cities with 29 European cities across 20 countries, which gives them a large base to build from. The timing also aligns with stronger trade links: the European Commission notes that EU–India goods trade was about €120 billion (US $142 billion) in 2024, and that India accounted for 2.4 percent of the EU’s total goods trade that year.
For extra context, Air India is also expanding its partnership network with Air India–Saudia codeshare, aimed at linking major hubs and making onward connections easier—another sign that Air India is using partnerships to improve connectivity as it scales up internationally.
