Trusted Traveler Program
The Trusted Traveler Program is a framework created by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to streamline the clearance of travelers who have been identified as low-risk after an intensive vetting process.
Its purpose is to enhance security while simultaneously reducing wait times at airports and border crossings.
The framework includes five different expedited-travel programs.
- Global Entry accelerates customs processing for international travelers who often return to the US.
- TSA PreCheck allows domestic travelers to keep their footwear and light outerwear while bypassing comprehensive pat-downs.
- NEXUS is best suited for frequent US-Canada travelers.
- SENTRI is commonly used by travelers crossing the southern US border regularly.
- FAST is for commercial truck drivers transporting goods across the US borders with Canada and Mexico.
Once a traveler applies, they must undergo background checks, identity verification, and, in many cases, an in-person interview with a CBP officer. This pre-clearance process ensures the individual poses minimal security risk.
After approval, the traveler receives membership credentials that allow them access to dedicated lanes, faster screening procedures, or automated processing systems, depending on the program.
