PIR number

A PIR (Property Irregularity Report) number is a unique reference code issued by an airline when a passenger reports lost, delayed, or damaged baggage. The number helps track and manage the claim through the airline’s baggage tracing system.

The PIR number is generated at the airport’s baggage services desk after the passenger fills out a report. It connects to the WorldTracer system—a global database used by most airlines and ground handling companies to locate missing luggage. Each PIR number is tied to specific details such as the passenger’s name, flight number, checked baggage tag, and destination.

Travelers can use this number to monitor their claim’s progress online or through customer service. Airlines are required to process PIR cases according to international regulations set by IATA and the Montreal Convention, which define compensation limits and timelines for baggage-related issues.

Some modern travel insurance providers use parametric insurance models that automatically trigger payouts based on data like flight delays or luggage mishandling reports.
