Boarding pass

A boarding pass is a document issued by an airline during check-in that grants a passenger permission to board a flight. It typically includes:

  • passenger name, flight number, date, and seat assignment;
  • departure and arrival airports, gate number, boarding time, and departure time; and
  • scannable code used by airport and airline staff for verification.

Many airlines now offer electronic boarding passes that passengers can access on their mobile devices. They display the same information as traditional paper boarding passes and a scannable barcode or QR code.

Boarding passes are essential for security checks and to verify a passenger’s identity and eligibility to board the flight.

This is not to be confused with an e-ticket, which is proof of purchase and reservation for a flight but does not include any boarding information.
