US Air-Traffic Controllers Take Gig Jobs Amid Government Shutdown

As the US government shutdown enters its third week, thousands of air traffic controllers are working without pay — and many have turned to gig jobs to make ends meet. The situation, first reported on October 20, 2025, underscores the growing strain on the nation’s aviation system as staffing shortages cause widespread flight delays.
Controllers, deemed essential employees, continue to report for duty despite not receiving paychecks since the shutdown began on October 1. Many have taken on side work, such as driving for Uber or delivering food for DoorDash, to cover mortgages and daily expenses. “No one takes IOUs,” a union representative told Fortune, describing the financial and emotional toll on the workforce.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports that staffing-related problems now account for roughly half of all flight delays — a tenfold increase from pre-shutdown levels. Major US airports, including Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, and Newark, have seen mounting disruptions as overworked controllers face longer shifts and fewer rest periods. Earlier, the FAA had to furlough 11,322 workers due to the US shutdown.
The National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) has warned that morale is deteriorating rapidly, raising concerns about fatigue and potential safety risks. International aviation groups and fellow controllers have issued public statements of solidarity, urging Washington to end the impasse.
Transportation officials acknowledged that continued unpaid labor could trigger resignations or further absences, deepening the disruption. While no safety incidents have been linked directly to the shutdown, experts warn that prolonged stress and understaffing could compromise system reliability.
For now, flights remain operational — but travelers are facing more frequent delays and cancellations as the US airspace system strains under the combined pressure of overwork, underpayment, and political deadlock.
